The Sustainable Girton Project

Plans for the Future

Sustainable Girton is only just getting going, so while we already have a number of schemes up and running, we'd like to do more.

Wind Turbine

One of the more ambitious ideas is to install a small wind turbine in Girton. This would be able to provide a significant proportion of the electricity for the Glebe School, Pavillion, and other community buildings. A feasibility study has been commissioned to investigate if a turbine would be practical, and we are keen to hear your opinions of this idea - both positive and negative.

Solar Heating

The Glebe School has a small swimming pool that is currently heated using gas. Again, a feasibility study has been commissioned to assess the costs and benefits of augmenting this with some solar water heating panels.

Other Ideas

We have many other ideas, ranging from sourcing and supplying low-energy lightbulbs for all residents and help with composting and recycling, to building energy-efficient housing from recycled materials. As these take shape, and more people become involved, we hope that we will be able to diversify into a wide range of activities and promote sustainability in all shapes and forms.

Our main aim is to raise the profile of sustainability and encourage individuals to contribute, in whatever way they can.
